I am really disturbed by French Designer Handbag brands’ victory in the French courts today. They went to court to stop prefumes being sold below retail priced on eBay. This could mean we all have to pay much more for designer goods: in the second part of the case the court agreed with Louis Vuitton that eBay sellers would not be allowed to sell fine fragrances at a discount. That does not mean cheap designer knockoffs - these were reputable retailers selling genuine perfumes at discount prices. This decision seems to fly in the face of every piece of free trade law in Europe, and I hop eBay win their appeal. Read more »

A French court has ordered eBay to pay 40m euros ($63m) in damages to the owners of luxury designer handbag brands Louis Vuitton, Dior and Givenchy, for allowing online auctions of fake copies of its goods. The brand owning company, LVMH, took the action because it said eBay’s French site had not done enough to stop the sale of counterfeit designer bags and perfumes.

An eBay statement said LVMH was trying to “protect uncompetitive commercial practices at the expense of consumer choice” and added that it would appeal. Read more »

Last week, before I visited the Harvey Nichols Handbag shop, I went to one of the best midweek street markets in London, Leather Lane. I was relieved to learn that the alligator skin is farmed….
