If you are on the waiting list to buy a luxury Hermès Birkin bag, here is some good news.  The French house of Hermes has taken radical action to increase the supply of its famous Crocodile Birkin Bags by breeding its own crocodiles.   The animals will be bred for their skins at a farm in Australia. Three or four crocodile pelts can be used to make one exotic Hermès Birkin Handbag, which is sold for as much as $45000. At the moment Hermès makes 3000 exclusive crocodile bags each year and that is not enough to meet demand. Farming crocodiles is expensive and labour intensive, with the animals living in separate enclosures to preserve their skins in perfect condition. Up to a third of the animals die before maturity from the stress of captivity: are you sure you still want that crocodile handbag? The good news is that Hermès is recruiting more staff – up to 100 extra trainees have been employed to make the high class leather bags.  They will join 2000 existing skilled crafts people at Hermes’ French sites.
