Designer Handbag Prices – Recession Proof?
What a closed little world I have been living in – writing about designer handbags, craving the latest addition to my accessories, the prices do not phase me even though I can only afford to buy ones in a blue moon. Yesterday I was flicking through a newspaper in the pub and there was a photo showing the price of everything the model was wearing – including her Prada Fairy Bag, priced at £1100. “HOW MUCH?” said my Mum in the way that only a Mother can. “It’s a Prada” I shrugged, but it made me think. How much hype have I been taking in when I don’t think the price is high? OK, the Prada handbag is made from buckskin and the printed fairy picture is a delight, but why is this limited edition bag able to sell at that price? Scarcity always makes us want something more: tell us we may not be able t buy the bag and we want it even more. Put us on a three month waiting list and we are the envy of our friends, so if I had a beautiful bag as worn by Tilda Swinton, Sienna Miller and Jennifer Love Hewitt, I would be pretty smug. And the price would just be a minor detail. After all, you could pay alot more for used Harleys.
