Recycled Designer Handbags

recycled purseIs it possible that we will soon take recycled handbags seriously? There is already a plethora of bags using scrap packaging and many of them look really sharp, although they are a little too shiny for my taste. This one is made from discarded ring pulls, and it looks better than many.  Almost all of them are manufactured in a fairtrade manner, which is reassuring. If  digital signage ever becomes resuable that would be an interesting design idea.

    Hi
Please could you tell me where to look and to purchase the ‘ring pull’ bag?

    Thanks

These handbags are made in Brazil by a company called Escama, who use aluminum ring pulls that are recycled from drinks cans. The women who make the bags work in cooperatives, and they are paid a fair wage for their skills. The company also 3% of gross annual sales directly back to these cooperatives.

Each bag contains a personal note from the artist who made it, giving you a connection with the makes wherever you live. There are stockists in more than a dozen countries, you can find a full list of outlets on the company website at escamastudio.com. If you are in the UK, like me, you can buy an Escama Recycled bag at the Royal Academy Gift Shop in Piccadilly.
